Original Montgomery is the oldest surviving company chosen by the British Admiralty in the early 1890`s to make the first duffle coats for the Royal Navy.
We offer the very best in British design and craftsmanship. Our iconic toggle coat is a handmade to the highest quality, utilising traditional construction methods along with the finest raw materials.
At Original Montgomery we believe in ethical sustainable fashion, not fast fashion. Montgomery products are made to last a lifetime and we’ve now introduced premium recycled wool into 95% of our toggle coats to reduce our impact on the environment. Our wool fabric is given a special finish for a softer touch and yet remains durable in the extreme.
At the request of the Admiralty, the toggle coat was created to keep out the worst of the weather whilst not restricting the movement of sailors.
The template was confirmed as a semi double breasted design with asymmetric closing held together with wooden toggles and sitting at mid thigh length.
This first fabric was the same double faced material we use today, double faced to create a true weatherproof barrier.

Based on our classic Montgomery design with traditional fixed saddle shoulder, this is our most popular mid-length recycled wool mix duffle coat. This sets the standard for all British made duffle coats.
Handmade in England made from the best Italian cloth from Tuscany. 70% wool and 30% mixed fibres – the wool is completely recycled to preserve precious resources, whilst the mixed fibres creates a smooth finish and prevents pilling. Luxury softness is achieved by steaming the fabric with soft Apennine mountain water from the River Bisenzio. Classic double-sided fabric woven together, not stuck or glued like inferior copies.
Features: Two piece pancake shaped hood is closed with slide adjusters, Detachable throat tab is held back with colour matched buttons, Twin patch pockets, interior wallet pocket, all seams bound in tonal edging fabric. Resistant to pilling.
The closures are leather with real buffalo horn toggles, with concealed zip for even greater warmth.
